Comoros

World Watch Ranking: 45

What does persecution look like in Comoros?

The majority of the people in Comoros follow Sunni Islam—instituted as the state religion in 2018. Christians are forbidden from sharing the gospel, and any distribution of Bibles or religious materials to a Muslim is illegal. Sunni Muslims are the only ones allowed to participate in public religious celebrations, and Comoros does not have an official process to register non-Sunni religious groups.

There are many reports of local communities ostracizing individuals suspected of converting from Islam to Christianity, which forces many converts to keep their faith a secret. Any Christian who evangelizes can face legal consequences, including a fine and up to a year in prison. Finally, in some parts of this small country, extremist groups are active and threaten believers.

Who is most vulnerable to persecution?

Christians who convert from Islam are the most likely to face severe persecution from family and community.

Meet “Titus”

“Barely three days after I decided to follow Christ, my house was burned down. I was only able to rescue my laptop. All I had was the clothes on my back. I felt this was a test of my faith in Christ, but it turned out to be faith strengthening.”

Titus is a believer from a Muslim background

What has changed this year?

Comoros held a position among the top 10 countries in the early years of the World Watch List. In recent years, it has consistently recorded scores surpassing 60 points. There is no difference this year, as the country continues to be an extremely difficult place for believers, particularly those who have converted from Islam.

What does Open Doors do to help Christians in Comoros?

Open Doors works through local partners to strengthen the persecuted church in East African islands through discipleship and economic empowerment projects.

How can you pray for Comoros?

  • Pray for Christians who have come to a saving knowledge of Christ out of Islam. Ask God to protect them.
  • Ask God to give secret Christians the knowledge that they belong to a global family of believers. Ask Him to help them meet even one other Christian this year.
  • Pray that the government of Comoros will ease their restrictions on practicing the Christian faith and will treat all religions fairly.
please pray

Dear God, we pray for our brothers and sisters in Comoros. As they risk pressure and family rejection because they follow You, we ask You to help them see they aren't alone. Give them encouragement, fellowship and a sense of belonging. We pray for safety and hope. And we ask You to open up the country of Comoros, that it might be a place where the gospel can flourish. We ask this in Your Son's name, Amen.
