What does persecution look like in Niger?

The situation for Christians in Niger has worsened significantly since a coup in 2023, which destabilised an already fragile nation. The instability has emboldened Islamic militants, including those who have vowed allegiance to the Islamic State group and Al Qaeda. In some parts of Niger, these groups operate without much resistance; strict Islamic law is imposed and enforced. In other regions, church buildings are destroyed, and believers are killed. The country’s borders with Mali and Burkina Faso are porous and easy for militants to cross, allowing them to gain more territory with ease.

Any Christians living in places dominated by these extremist groups will be targeted. Believers – especially converts from Islam – must worship in secret, living under the constant threat of violence, abduction and death.

Additionally, the lack of rule of law in Niger means that radical Islamic ideologies can spread throughout society, meaning life grows more dangerous for Christians even in places where Islamic militants aren’t active.

Who is most vulnerable to persecution?

Christians who live in rural areas carry the most risk, but throughout the country, converts from Islam face the most significant persecution.

"I will not say that God has rejected me, God forbid. But I can say that I am paying the price of following Jesus."

"Hakuri", a widow in Niger.

What has changed this year?

Niger rose by two places on this year’s World Watch List, but the nature of the persecution remains the same. Niger presents one of the harshest environments in the Sahel for religious minorities – a region defined by jihadist rule, community hostility and state neglect. During the 2026 World Watch List reporting period, Christians were abducted, Christian property and churches were destroyed, and thousands of believers were displaced, all due to violence from armed militants.

What does Open Doors do to help Christians in Niger?

Open Doors works through local churches in Niger to provide economic empowerment, persecution-preparedness training, cross-cultural ministry and discipleship.

How can you pray for Niger?

  • A military junta has ruled Niger since 2023, and some basic freedoms are still elusive. Pray the military will govern fairly and offer elections soon – and that stability will return to Niger.
  • In some parts of Niger, Christians live at risk from attack by Islamic militants. Pray for protection and for those displaced by the insecurity of the region.
  • When a Nigerien converts from Islam to Christianity, they can face severe pressure from both family and community. Pray for these followers of Jesus to experience the Lord’s provision in all their physical and spiritual needs.

a prayer for Niger

Heavenly Father, our family in Niger live their daily lives under such intense risk. We pray for their protection. Put Your loving arms around them and give them eyes to see that Jesus walks alongside them in their suffering. We pray for stability and peace to come to Niger. And we ask You to change the hearts of the militants who hate Your people, that they would come to see the light and love of Jesus. We ask all of this in the name of Your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
