According to a UN report published on 19 July 2023, over 40 civilians have been killed near the city of Bunia in DRC's Ituri province over the course of just three days: "Overall, more than 600 civilians have been killed in Ituri this year, while some 345,000 have been displaced," the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states. Several militia groups are operating in eastern DRC which leads to a constant death toll on civilians. In an unconnected attack on 16 July 2023 in North Kivu province, 11 civilians were killed by suspected M23 rebels in Rutshuru territory, roughly 70 kilometers from Goma, the provincial capital.
World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The trauma inflicted on civilian populations, including the harsh experiences of Christians at the hands of numerous armed groups, remains a critical issue. The ability of Christians to live peacefully and express their faith is significantly hampered by the constant risk of attack. The prospect of immediate resolution seems bleak due to the current political impasse and various socio-economic hurdles. It seems that the July 2023 UN report is just another in a long line of reports that have failed to result in any substantive change for the civilians in the region. Despite the ongoing documentation of the atrocities occurring, the actual situation on the ground remains largely unaltered.”
