Kenya: Al-Shabaab intensifies attacks in border region

Show: false / Country: Kenya /

As reported by Garowe Online on 25 June 2023, al-Shabaab executed five civilians in Kenya in the villages of Juhudi and Salama in Lamu county on the border with Somalia on 25 June. A resident stated that “women were locked in the houses and the men ordered out, where they were tied with ropes and butchered”. Some were beheaded. Earlier, on 21 June 2023, as reported by Nation, three civilians were killed in Mandera county, when a vehicle containing 14 passengers was hit by an explosive device planted by suspected al-Shabaab militants. TeleSure reported of further suicide attacks on military personnel on 6 July 2023.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The expanding operations of al-Shabaab in Kenya pose a significant risk to the Christian-majority areas, including regions like Mandera and border towns. In reaction to the recent wave of attacks, the Kenyan government has decided to delay officially re-opening border crossings which had been closed since 2011 when Kenya entered southern Somalia to help fight al-Shabaab (Reuters, 5 July 2023). In addition, it plans to significantly upscale security in the border region (The Star, 5 July 2023). Time will tell if the new security measures will effectively improve safety for civilians – and for Christians in particular - in the region.”
