Somalia: Government offensive is struggling to make effective progress

Show: false / Country: Somalia /

According to Hiiraan Online reporting on 13 June 2023, A military offensive killed at least 19 al-Shabaab militants on 12 June 2023. The operation took place in Bula-Mohamed-Abdalla village on the outskirts of Awdheegle and was conducted with the support of international partners.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The current operations against al-Shabaab have yet to demonstrate significant progress in terms of defeating or weakening the group’s capabilities. Despite such minor ‘successes’ as reported above, al-Shabaab remains capable of shifting focus to neighboring countries such as Kenya, posing a severe threat to the region. This concern is further exacerbated by the imminent withdrawal of African Union forces (VOA, 17 June 2023), which will undoubtedly place a significant burden on the Somali national forces, testing their capacity to counter the group effectively. For Christians in the country and the broader region there is no foreseeable respite from the constant and ever-present threat of attack by militants.”
