China/Taiwan: Anti-US and anti-Catholic propaganda

The Chinese embassy in Paris posted a picture on Twitter criticizing the visit by US House of Representative’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

The heightened tension surrounding the visit by US House of Representative’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan has been widely discussed in the media (e.g. The Diplomat, 5 August 2022). Perhaps less widespread was the picture posted by the Chinese embassy in Paris on Twitter depicting ‘a baby sleeping on a bed while a scary woman draped in a baroque sheet and crowned with stars enters through the window to obviously attack the innocent child. But a muscular man with a hammer and a sickle stands by, ready to protect his progeniture. To make sure that foreigners understand the underlying nationalist and macho message, an English subtitle states: No one likes war, but no father would ever allow someone to steal his child’ (UCA News, 4 August 2022).

World Watch Research analyst Thomas Muller comments: “The picture’s anti-Christian element is contained in a few words added to a hashtag in Chinese only. These refer to the woman in the picture as depicting the Virgin Mary. Since Mrs Pelosi is Catholic, the message to the Chinese audience is that US foreign policy and global Catholicism are acting together as a combined, dangerous force against China.”
