Guatemala: LGBTI view Christians as "enemies of equality"

Show: false / Country: Latin America /
As reported by the news platform 20 Minutes on 24 June 2017, a gay pride parade took place in Guatamala City on 24 June. Participants sang and shouted slogans against the intolerance of the authorities, Christian institutions and in particular of Protestant churches. Rossana Ramirez, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, comments: "As in other countries in the region, such parades are the ideal context for the LGBT community to publicly express their disagreement with Christian churches and groups. However, while it is true that in Guatemala there are still hate crimes against LGBTI adherents, they attack religious groups as the "˜enemies of equality" ignoring the fact that Christians were the first defenders of human rights and the first to reject violence."
