Kenya: Israel and Kenya agree on security cooperation

Show: false / Country: Middle East /

Haaretz reported on 28 February 2016 that Kenya and Israel have agreed to cooperate in fighting terrorism. President Uhuru visited Israel 20-25 February and diplomatic sources say that Kenya is seeking expertise from Israel on how to fight terrorist groups in a bid to defeat the Somali al-Shabaab militants. Nadav Peldman, Israeli deputy ambassador to Kenya, told the East African on 27 February: "Israel is ready and willing to assist Kenya and any other nation for that matter to fight terrorism whenever it appears. Terrorism is a heinous crime that should be confronted with the same force it projects."

Yonas Dembele, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, points out: "The main victims of terrorism in Kenya have been Christians. On many occasions, intelligence failure or failure of security forces to respond to attacks on time has frustrated Christians in the country. Thus, seeking cooperation from countries like Israel might fill the gap."

Yonas Dembele adds: "Cooperation between Israel and Kenya is not something new. During the 1976 Entebbe Operation, Kenya provided assistance to Israeli special forces. In 2002, terrorists attacked Paradise Hotel (a tourist hotel owned by Israelis in Kikambala). In the same year, there was also an attempt to blow up an Israeli charter jet in Mombasa. Israel has also been facing attacks from different radical groups for decades. Thus, it is crucial that the two countries agree to cooperate on countering terrorism."
