Maldives: Apostasy will not be tolerated

Show: false / Country: Maldives /
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has published a policy paper dealing (among other topics) with the question of apostates, reported Maldives Independent on 11 April 2018. Thomas Muller, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, comments: "Although the paper deals with the question of how to combat radicalization as well, it is very clear that apostasy is not to be tolerated in the Maldives: If efforts to bring an apostate back to Islam fail, he or she will be punished. The Minister of Defense has also stated in all due clarity that he will never allow freedom of religion in the Maldives since it is a "˜country with moderate Islamic values" (as Maldives Independent reported on 15 April 2018). Once again, it is made very clear that Christians are not welcome in the Maldives."
