Uganda: 38 school pupils killed by ADF militants

Show: false / Country: Uganda /
As reported by AP News on 17 June 2023, the Islamic State-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) executed a brutal attack on a secondary school in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha town, close to the border with Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). 48 civilians were killed, of whom 38 were students at the school. Some students were burned beyond recognition, and others were shot or hacked to death. At least 6 other people were abducted. The massacre sent shockwaves through the country and reminded Ugandans of the potential danger of the ADF, and comes at a time when Uganda is leading an offensive against the group inside DRC.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “This was not the first attack on a school in Uganda by the ADF. In June 1998, 80 students were burned to death in their dormitories in an ADF attack on Kichwamba Technical Institute near the DRC border (HRW, 10 June 1998). More than 100 students were abducted at that time. The ADF, originally a Ugandan rebel group, later aligned itself with the Islamic State group, adopting a radical Islamic ideology and a taste for targeting Christians. The June 2023 attack occurs as Ugandan security forces intensify their operations against suspected ADF cells both within Uganda and neighboring DRC. It is worth noting that ADF militants have also perpetrated numerous atrocities in DRC, further highlighting the regional impact of their violent activities.”
