Vietnam: Vo Van Thuong is the second president to resign in just over a year

Show: false / Country: Vietnam /

The Vietnamese parliament has accepted the resignation of President Vo Van Thuong, as reported by Reuters on 20 March 2024. Reasons for the resignation point to another potential corruption case.

World Watch Research analyst Thomas Muller comments: “Corruption is one of the major problems the Communist Party is having to contend with: President Thuong’s predecessor, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, resigned on 18 January 2023 after a series of corruption scandals. Thus, two presidents have resigned in just over a year (Fulcrum, 20 March 2024). The government’s more immediate concerns are arguably the economy and investors’ confidence, especially as Vietnam is one of the beneficiaries of the worldwide ‘friendshoring’ process (ASEAN Briefing, 23 September 2023). Nevertheless, political insecurity is never welcome and the continued uncertainty was illustrated by the fact that the Central Party Committee was unable to quickly agree on a candidate to replace Thuong. Political instability is always a worrying time for ethnic minorities in the country as well, to which many Christians belong.”
