Chile: Misuse of religion for political gain

Show: false / Country: Latin America /
According to a report by the news platform El Democrata on 16 May 2017, a potential presidential candidate claiming to be Christian has proposed that the State should pay for sex change operations and accept the adoption of children by same-sex couples. He also stated that churches must recognize same-sex "marriage". ‚ Rossana Ramirez, working for World Watch Research, comments: "The fact that a public figure claims to be Christian in a Catholic country like Chile can carry great influence in society. To make use of religion in politics as a lever to obtain votes and then propose policies that go against the very principles of that religion, abuses both society and the religion concerned - in this case, the Christian faith."
