Only weeks after Ireland adopted
gay marriage by referendum, the human rights organization Amnesty International launched a
campaign that attacks the country"s abortion laws and demands that restrictions on abortion be removed, although there is
opposition to that model of abortion provision, according to LifeSiteNews (9 June 2015). The news service quotes Niamh U Bhriain of the Life Institute saying that "Amnesty"s high profile campaigns and public statements now seem to be part of a universal push for abortion. ("¦) Amnesty was founded to highlight human rights abuses, especially in regard to political prisoners and those suffering under unjust regimes, now it seems to spend most of its time attacking the rights of the most vulnerable person of all "“ the unborn child."
Dennis Pastoor, persecution analyst for WWR, comments: "Social-ethical issues, such as abortion or gay marriage, are often on top of the agenda of human rights activists. Mrs. U Bhriain is right when she says that they focus excessively on this kind of issues. Beyond promoting values and policies that contradict Christian teachings, Amnesty International"s pro-abortion campaign in Ireland illustrates the
anti-democratic attitude of many of the drivers of
Secular intolerance. Issues are pushed through in spite of the fact that the majority of the population often opposes them, and generally no room is left for contradiction or conscientious objection based on religious convictions."
