Jordan: Muslim Brotherhood back in parliament

Elections for Jordan"s Lower House of Parliament took place on 20 September 2016. Agenzia Fides reported on 24 September 2016 that, after nearly a decade of boycotting elections, the Islamic Action Front (IAF) participated this time and won 15 out of 130 seats. The IAF is the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood. Nine Christians - the minimum quota guaranteed to the Christian community as a religious minority - were also elected. Henriette Kats, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, comments: "Most analysts do not expect the return of the IAF to parliament to cause any immediate change for the Hashemite kingdom. Fifteen seats is no great number, however we should not underestimate the country"s well organized opposition. Though their return is not likely to have any great effect in the short run, it is too early to see what may develop in the longer term. The Jordanian king wants to reform society by holding radical Islamic influences in check. However, this is dividing society and leading to unrest, especially among conservative Muslims. These now have a mouthpiece in parliament and will most certainly make use of it in the future."
