Malaysia: Probability of snap elections growing

Show: false / Country: Malaysia /
As UCA News reported on 20 April 2017, Prime Minister Najib Razak pointed to the possibility of snap elections taking place already this year. His party definitely benefits from a deeply split opposition and so far he has survived all political attacks concerning the ongoing background corruption scandal. Thomas Muller, persecution analyst at World Watch Research, says: "There is no such thing as the perfect timing, but Prime Minister Razak seems to have paved the way by recently wooing (Christian) religious minority voters in the states of Sabah and Sarawak by shelving a private bill on the introduction of Sharia Law in federal states. However, Razak has shown that he is willing and able to play the Islamic and/or ethnic card if necessary. Christians who already feel insecure, not least because of the still unsolved mystery surrounding Pastor Raymond Koh (abducted 10 weeks ago), have no reason to sit back and relax."
