As reported by Vanguard on 8 July 2022, Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom spoke at a Freedom of Religion and Belief event in London at the beginning of July. He stated that Nigeria is “under siege and that bombing churches and killing the clergy and worshippers was meant to send fear into the living to restrict their religious freedom.”
The same news outlet reported on 10 July 2022 that Governor Ortom met with the Archbishop of Canterbury and listened to debates in the UK House of Lords on the invitation of Baroness Cox. The report then stated: “Only two weeks ago, Governor Ortom spoke on two television programmes – Arise News and Channels TV. He stated unequivocally that if nothing is done to arrest the worsening insecurity in the country, one day soon, terrorists will take over the Presidential Villa.”
Frans Veerman, Managing Director of World Watch Research comments: “Governor Ortom is one of the few state governors who is prepared to publicly question President Buhari’s lack of action against armed Fulani herdsmen and other groups who have been attacking Christian communities in Benue State and beyond. While Buhari’s government is drawing attention to ISWAP as being the main enemy, it would seem that it is at the same time protecting Fulani militia from being seriously combatted by the security services. The future for Nigerians (particularly for Christians), looks bleak if the government allows the influence of radical Islamic forces in the country to grow.”
