Burkina Faso: New spiral of violence in northern region

Show: false / Country: Burkina Faso /

According to Al-Jazeera reporting on 16 June 2022, at least 50 civilians were killed when an armed group attacked a village in Seno province in the night of 11/12 June. The group, which is likely to have been fighters linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group (IS), carried out “the systematic execution of anyone they encountered in the village”.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “After eleven policemen were attacked and killed on 9 June (Al-Jazeera, 10 June 2022), the army launched an operation and claimed to have killed 40 rebels. The brutal village attack can be seen as a reprisal for this action. Burkina Faso has become the epicenter of the conflict in the Sahel with fighters linked to al-Qaeda and IS continuing to target civilians and government security forces. According to a UN report published on 8 December 2021, an estimated 1.7 million people have been displaced due to the insecurity. The army is struggling to contain the violence and the space for religious freedom for Christians in the northern part of the country is shrinking as they face increasing restrictions due to the insecurity. The fact that these militant groups are bent on creating an Islamic caliphate continues to put not only Christians but everyone who does not subscribe to their radical Islamic ideology at risk.”
