BBC News reported on 5 September 2022 that at least 20 people, including women and children, were killed and food aid destroyed after militants attacked several vehicles in Somalia's central Hiiraan region. Islamist militant group al-Shabaab claimed it was targeting a government-affiliated armed group.

World Watch Research analyst Yonas Dembele comments: “The al-Shabaab insurgency, which aims to overthrow the central government, continues to rage on in Somalia, causing great suffering for the civilian population. The al-Qaeda linked group already controls much of southern and central Somalia and appears to have intensified its activities despite all efforts by the government to neutralize it. Just days ago in August 2022, al-Shabaab militants stormed a hotel in Mogadishu and killed more than 20 people (BBC News, 21 August 2022). Over the years, al-Shabaab has repeatedly expressed its desire to eradicate any Christian presence in the country.”
