Bangladesh: Secularism 1 - Islam 0?

Show: false / Country: Bangladesh /

As UCA News reported on 1 March 2016, Bangladesh"s Supreme Court has begun reviewing a petition challenging the inclusion of Islam as the country"s state religion in its constitution.

Thomas Muller, persecution analyst for World Watch Research, relates: "Given the recent violent attacks against religious minorities by homegrown radical Muslims, this hearing is a bold but necessary step. That the challenge came from minority leaders, including a Catholic bishop, is an encouraging sign showing that minorities are being heard. Bangladesh"s constitution is confusing: No-one has yet been able to explain how a per definition Islamic state can be secular at the same time. That both notions are fixed in the constitution reflects the country"s rugged history and politics. It remains to be seen how radical Muslims and the opposition react to this move and if religious minorities, including Christians, will face additional or increasing attacks."
