Nepal: Number of Christians growing

Show: false / Country: Nepal /

On 3 June 2023, the government of Nepal released caste, ethnicity, language and religious statistics based on Census 2021. As reported by Mission Network News on 4 July 2023, this national census data shows rapid growth in the numbers of Christians in Nepal, which rose by nearly 40 percent in less than a decade. South Korean missionaries are said to have contributed much to this growth.

World Watch Research analyst Rolf Zeegers comments: “The actual number of Christians in Nepal is disputed. Through research for World Watch List 2023, it was found that the majority of experts  confirm that the Church in Nepal is growing steadily, but the pace has slowed, especially since 2015 when the Constitution was modified. Since 2015, Article 26 of the Constitution states: ‘No person shall … convert another person from one religion to another or any act or conduct that may jeopardize other's religion and such act shall be punishable by law.’ As a result, Christians have had to limit their evangelistic activities in Nepal. This modification of the Constitution was due in part to pressure on the government from radical Hindu and Buddhist groups. For this reason, it may be unwise to publicize widely that the Church in Nepal is growing rapidly; it could well provoke radical elements to increase their attacks on Christians.”
